Owene Godsey

Owene A. Godsey, age 92 of Houston, passed away Monday, July 8, 2024 at her residence.

She was born July 7, 1932 in Houston, Alabama to Owen and Mary Alford. She graduated from Addison High School and then married her high school sweetheart, Carl Godsey, on July 5, 1950. They immediately left for Detroit, MI. After a short stay, they decided that wasn’t for them. They came back to Winston County and stayed a couple of years and then moved to Birmingham. While in Birmingham, Owene attended Howard College for about a year—walking to school. Again, they decided to move back to Winston County. Carl started a lumber business and Owene stayed home and helped on the farm and taught school in several places in the county. She later decided to finish her BS degree at St. Bernard College. She finished in 1969 and began her teaching career. She took more classes while working, achieving a master’s degree and AA certificate in Education.

After 25 years in Education, Owene retired and began a new career—helping raise grandkids! She enjoyed being a part of their lives, supporting them in school and the many activities they were involved in. Owene loved to travel. She told many stories of traveling “out west” with her Daddy and other family members. She and Carl went on several mission trips to Bolivia. They also enjoyed many other trips throughout the U.S and abroad. She was always up for an adventure. She decided, after going on a few snow skiing trips with family, that at the age of 64, she wanted to try it herself. And she did! She skied on a few trips after that, but quickly retired after a tumble that resulted in a torn meniscus. She has always been active in her church—in United Methodist Women, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, and many other church activities. Owene was also an award-winning seamstress. She loved sewing beautiful clothes for the grandchildren. Her work was often on display in the exquisite Easter dresses she made every year for the girls in the family—each year seeming to “outdo” the last. She was also a fantastic cook—always making sure the family had fresh vegetables from the garden, delicious cakes and her special “angel biscuits” that everyone loved. Her pancakes and carrot cake were family favorites. She was always up for a game of dominoes (which she usually won) and spending time with friends and family.

Above all of these things, Owene’s greatest treasure was her family. Her legacy of “family” will continue to live on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all of those lucky enough to call her “Mom.”

Service will be held at Houston Memorial United Methodist Church in Houston, Alabama. Family will receive friends Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 10:00a.m. until service time at 11:00a.m. in the sanctuary. Becky Scott and Johnny Frazier will officiate.

Owene is survived by her husband of 74 years, Carl Godsey; children, Mary Moore and Robert (Tonya) Godsey; sister, Betty Godsey; grandchildren, John Godsey, Chris (Lauren) Godsey, Brittney Godsey, Amelia Godsey, James D. (Mary) Moore, Stephen (Haley) Moore, and Mary Beth (Evan) Bush; great grandchildren, Ethan Moore, Ella Moore, Eli Moore, Liam Moore, Ryley Moore, Kinley Moore, Maddie Bush, Bryson Bush, Ava Godsey and Jade Godsey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Owen Alford; sisters, Evelyn Sterling and Peggy Owens.
