Earl Thomas "Tommy" Smith, Jr.

Earl Thomas “Tommy” Smith, Jr., age 82, of Hamilton, formerly of Marrietta, Georgia, passed away at his residence on Friday, July 5, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Tommy was born on November 12, 1941, in Carrollton, Georgia to Earl Thomas Smith, Sr., and Iva L. Smith. He had two sisters, Barbara Brooks and Brenda Smith. He attended Osborne School in Smyrna, Georgia. Tommy worked as a dispatcher at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, where he retired in 2005 and started a fencing business “Agape Fencing”. He met his late wife, Peggy, in 1961 at a skating rink in Marrietta, Georgia. They married later that year on September 8 in Timpson, Texas. They had four children: Tammy, Angela, David, and Joey. Tommy and Peggy were married for 30 years when they separated in 1990. For 19 years, their son, Joey, prayed for his parents to reunite. And in 2009, they reunited and remarried in Hackleburg, Alabama. They moved to Hamilton where they were married for 12 more years until Peggys passing in 2021.

Tommy loved his family, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had many names for his grandchildren, Papaw, Papaw Tommy, and Papaw Big. He had 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, and loved each one of them so much. Tommy loved his shows, and anybody who knew him knew that was the old westerns. He loved playing his guitar, woodworking, and was a family first man. But most of all he loved the Lord, and was so excited and ready to see Him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, Alabama, where services will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Poplar Log Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamilton, Alabama.
