David Wendell Harris

July 3, 1938 — March 12, 2021

David Wendell Harris went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 12, 2021 at his home surrounded by his beloved wife and four children. David was born in Danville, Alabama to Sherrill and Dessa Harris in 1938 and shortly after, moved to Double Springs. After graduating from Winston County High School in 1956, his family moved to Chicago, Illinois at which time he began his career in accounting. In 1959, he met his wife, Evelyn, at Gage Park Baptist Church in Chicago and they married in 1960. In 1972, after the birth of their four children, David moved his family back to Double Springs where he resided until his passing.

David was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He was also a member of Gideons International. David helped at Main Street Ministries where he shared the Gospel to many residents of Double Springs and Winston County. He went to South Africa on a mission trip of which he so enjoyed sharing with his family and friends.

 David is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Evelyn; daughters Patty Bailey, Laura (Lynn) Thompson; sons David Harris, Jr., and Ron (Paula) Harris. He is Grandpa to Lisa (Brian) Hixon, John Bailey, Todd (Angie) Martin, David (Wendy) Martin, Brittney (Matt) Fannin, Bethany (Blake) Anthony, Ben Harris, Joshua Harris, Nate Harris, and Drew Harris. He is also Great-Grandpa to Catelynn, Carli, and Kami Martin, Ky and Luka Anthony, and Avery Harris. He is also survived by his siblings Virginia Harris, Marlin Harris, James Harris, and Ernest Harris, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

 David was preceded in death by his parents, Sherrill and Dessa Harris, his mother and father-in-law, Thomas and Selma Gray, and infant brother, Gwen Harris.

 Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Rock Creek Baptist Church from 2:00 - 4:00 followed by a service celebrating his life at 4:00. There will be a brief graveside service and final prayer at Rock Creek Cemetery.

Evelyn and her children would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to New Beacon Hospice nurses and staff for the excellent care and support they provided for almost two years. We would like to especially thank Ashley and Dianna for loving our dad so well.
