Alex Castro, age 70 of Haleyville, formerly of Brooklyn, New York, entered into rest on June 21, 2019 at his residence.
He was born December 25, 1948 to the late Amelia Rosario and Alex Castro, Sr.. Alex, also known as “Elia Cid,” proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Alex; however, was more known for his masterful artistic abilities. He began developing his gifts at an early age, but gained a more expansive knowledge studying at both Brooklyn Museum’s Art School and at the Art Student’s League in New York.
Alex’s art has been featured in numerous exhibits in museums. He has won numerous awards, including the Bronze Metal from the Academy of Arts, Science, and Letters in Paris, France. Alex shared his knowledge with numerous art students at North Hampton College and Tallapoosa Academy of Fine Arts. He authored the book “The Art of Painting Miniatures: Faces and Figures” and his work appeared in numerous other books, magazines, and articles, and illustrated a children’s book called “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Story for Children”. He had retired to Haleyville with his beloved partner, the late Diana Wyllie.
Alex is survived by his sons, Rolland, Antonio, and Alex, Jr. Castro; daughter, Alexis Castro; brother, George Ortiz; sister, Angie Castro; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and partner.
