Peter Dwight Ward, 62 of the Nesmith Community entered into rest on January 20, 2012 in Birmingham.
He was born on May 3, 1949 in Winston County, Alabama to Marvin Ward and Meta West Ward. He graduated from Lynn High School in 1968 and soon after entered the United States Army where he served his country for 23 years. He served two tours in Vietnam and one tour during Desert Storm. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor and two Purple Hearts. He attended church at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 6-9pm at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in the Nesmith Community, where services will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 2pm. He will lie in state from 1-2pm. Brother William McClellan will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sharon Privett Ward; daughters, Alicia Dawson, Tonya Sweeney and her husband John; brother, Curtis (Kathy) Smith; sisters, Patricia (Dwayne) Gamble, Reba Whitebird, Lisa (Bobby) Smith, Robbie Long, Pat (Dennis) Townsend; he was “Paw Paw” to one granddaughter, Jordan Guise; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Meta Ward; brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Ward; and step-brother, Wayne Smith.
